How to read a vehicle door-jamb sticker for towing
Your vehicle’s labels describe the configuration sitting in the driveway more accurately than a maximum number from an advertisement.
Find both labels
Most vehicles have a certification label and a tire-and-loading label in the driver-door or door-jamb area. Photograph them clearly so the values are available while planning.
Payload or occupant-and-cargo statement
Look for wording stating that combined occupants and cargo should never exceed a listed value. This is the starting payload figure for the vehicle as labeled. Added equipment installed afterward still needs to be considered.
GVWR and axle ratings
GVWR limits the loaded vehicle as a whole. Front and rear GAWR limit each axle. A combination can remain under GVWR while overloading the rear axle, so axle weights matter.
Tires are separate limits
The label identifies original tire size and pressures, but the tires presently installed must also have sufficient load capacity and be maintained correctly. Never inflate beyond the tire or wheel limit.
