What counts against vehicle payload?

Payload begins with the vehicle label

The tire-and-loading label normally states how much combined occupant and cargo weight the specific vehicle can carry. That figure already reflects the factory configuration, but later accessories and modifications may reduce what remains.

Count everything carried

The driver, passengers, pets, coolers, luggage, tools, roof cargo, bed cargo, aftermarket steps, caps, racks, winches, and other added equipment all consume payload.

• People and pets
• Cargo inside, on top of, or in the bed
• Aftermarket equipment
• Hitch hardware
• Trailer tongue or pin weight

Tongue weight is vehicle load

Although tongue weight comes from the trailer, the hitch transfers that downward force to the tow vehicle. It must fit within payload, hitch, axle, and tire limits simultaneously.

Calculate what remains

Subtract measured or carefully estimated occupants, cargo, hitch hardware, and tongue weight from the labeled payload. A positive result is necessary, but it does not replace separate tow-rating, GCWR, axle, tire, or stability checks.
