Towing fundamentals
How to calculate your real towing capacity
The advertised tow rating is only the first ceiling. Your real limit is whichever applicable rating runs out first.
Start with the exact configuration
Engine, transmission, drivetrain, cab, wheelbase, axle ratio, factory tow package, trim, and options can change ratings. Use the owner’s manual, towing guide, certification labels, and equipment labels for the vehicle you actually have—not a search result for a similar model.
Collect every controlling limit
Record maximum trailer weight, payload, GCWR, axle ratings, tire ratings, receiver capacity, ball-mount capacity, ball capacity, and the trailer’s GVWR. The smallest applicable limit controls.
- Vehicle tow rating
- Available payload after people and cargo
- GCWR minus actual loaded vehicle weight
- Receiver and tongue-weight rating
- Trailer, axle, and tire ratings
Use loaded weights
Dry brochure weight excludes some or all batteries, propane, water, dealer-installed equipment, food, luggage, tools, and recreational gear. A certified scale ticket is far more useful than an optimistic estimate.
Leave working margin
Passing every rating at exactly 100% leaves little room for measurement error, added cargo, wind, grades, heat, or emergency maneuvers. TowGenius shows remaining margin separately so a technically compliant setup is not mistaken for a comfortable one.
