How much can a motorhome really tow?
A motorhome’s advertised hitch rating is not automatically its real towing capacity once the coach is loaded.
Use the lower of two major limits
Begin with the installed hitch rating. Then subtract the motorhome’s actual loaded weight from GCWR. The smaller result is the preliminary trailer-weight ceiling before checking tongue, axle, tire, and equipment limits.
Weigh the coach as traveled
Passengers, fuel, fresh water, food, clothing, tools, bicycles, upgrades, and basement cargo can materially reduce combined-weight capacity. Weigh the coach in realistic trip condition.
OCCC is not towing capacity
Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity describes weight the coach can carry. Towing adds combined weight and may add tongue weight to the coach, so both OCCC-related loading and GCWR must be evaluated.
Flat towing changes tongue load—not combined weight
A properly configured flat-towed vehicle may impose little vertical tongue weight compared with a trailer, but its full rolling weight still counts toward GCWR and the hitch’s horizontal rating.
