Flat towing vs. using a car trailer
The lightest-looking solution is not automatically compatible. Vehicle approval, braking, hitch limits, and total weight all matter.
Flat towing or four-down
All four vehicle wheels remain on the road. The vehicle manufacturer must explicitly approve the exact model, drivetrain, and procedure for recreational towing. A baseplate, tow bar, wiring, safety cables, and supplemental braking are commonly required.
Tow dolly
A dolly lifts one axle and adds its own weight, tongue load, tires, bearings, and storage needs. Compatibility depends on the towed vehicle and dolly instructions.
Full car trailer
A full trailer keeps the vehicle off the road and can accommodate vehicles that cannot be flat towed. It also adds substantial weight and tongue load, and it must fit hitch, payload/OCCC, axle, GCWR, brake, and storage limits.
Compare complete weights
Use the towed vehicle’s actual weight plus every towing component. For a trailer, include the trailer itself, ramps, spare tire, tie-downs, and cargo. For four-down towing, include installed equipment and confirm all procedures.
