Motorhome hitch rating vs. actual towing capacity
The number stamped on the hitch is a component ceiling. The loaded motorhome and chassis ratings can create a lower limit.
The hitch is one component
Receiver ratings commonly specify maximum trailer weight and maximum vertical tongue weight. Extensions, adapters, drop receivers, and other equipment may have different or reduced ratings.
GCWR may reduce the usable amount
If a 15,250-pound GCWR motorhome weighs 11,500 pounds loaded, only 3,750 pounds remain by the combined-weight calculation—even if the receiver says 5,000 pounds.
Tongue weight can consume OCCC
A trailer’s tongue load presses on the motorhome and affects carrying capacity, rear-axle load, tires, and handling. A four-down towed vehicle usually has a different vertical-load profile but still counts toward GCWR.
Check the entire installed system
Confirm chassis and coach documentation, hitch label, tow-bar or ball-mount rating, safety devices, wiring, brakes, frame extensions, and any manufacturer restrictions. The lowest rating wins.
