Can a Jeep Wrangler tow a travel trailer?

Start with the exact Wrangler

Do not use a generic Wrangler rating. Two-door and four-door bodies, model year, trim, axle ratio, powertrain, transmission, and factory towing equipment can change the permitted trailer weight. Verify the owner’s manual and labels for the exact Jeep.

• Many historical configurations are rated around 2,000 to 3,500 pounds
• Selected properly equipped newer four-door models may reach 5,000 pounds
• A higher-rated Wrangler does not gain additional payload automatically

Use the trailer’s loaded weight

A camper advertised at 3,200 pounds dry may be considerably heavier after batteries, propane, water, dealer equipment, food, clothing, and camping gear are added. Compare the Wrangler with the trip-ready trailer weight or the trailer’s GVWR during early shopping.

Example payload check

Suppose a loaded camper weighs 3,500 pounds and carries 12% tongue weight. About 420 pounds presses on the Jeep. Add 400 pounds of occupants, 100 pounds of cargo, and 60 pounds of hitch hardware: roughly 980 pounds must fit the payload label, rear axle, tires, and receiver. Some Wranglers may not have that much usable payload.

Wheelbase and trailer behavior matter

A combination can remain below a weight rating and still be uncomfortable in wind or around passing trucks. Trailer length, frontal area, loading, tire condition, speed, brake setup, and the Wrangler’s wheelbase all affect stability. Follow any sway-control or weight-distribution instructions—and never use equipment the manufacturer prohibits.

Bottom line

A compact, carefully loaded trailer may fit a properly equipped Wrangler. A trailer near the Jeep’s maximum, or one that exhausts payload, tongue, axle, tire, or hitch capacity, is not a good match simply because the dry weight looks acceptable.
