How to calculate a boat’s true trailering weight
The boat’s published dry weight is only one part of what rolls down the highway.
Start with boat and engine
Confirm whether published boat weight includes the installed engine, options, hardtop, tower, electronics, seating, and other factory equipment. Definitions vary by manufacturer and model.
Add the trailer itself
Trailer weight includes frame, axles, bunks or rollers, winch, jack, brakes, wheels, and spare. Tandem-axle and heavily equipped trailers can weigh substantially more than a simple estimate.
Count fluids and equipment
Gasoline weighs roughly six pounds per gallon, while water is roughly 8.3 pounds per gallon. Batteries, anchors, coolers, safety gear, covers, skis, fishing equipment, and personal cargo also add up.
Scale the complete rig
The most reliable answer is a trip-ready scale weight. Obtain trailer axle weight and tongue weight using an appropriate weighing procedure, then compare every result with vehicle, hitch, trailer, axle, and tire limits.
