Weight-distribution hitches explained
Weight distribution can restore load across the tow vehicle and trailer axles, but it does not increase every towing rating.
What weight distribution changes
Spring bars apply leverage through the hitch system to redistribute some load from the tow vehicle’s rear axle toward the front axle and trailer axles. Correct setup can improve balance and steering response.
What it does not change
A weight-distribution hitch does not increase GVWR, GCWR, payload, axle ratings, tire ratings, trailer GVWR, or the rating of an incompatible receiver. Never use it to justify exceeding a limit.
Receiver modes may differ
Some receivers publish separate weight-carrying and weight-distributing limits. The vehicle and trailer manufacturers may require, allow, limit, or prohibit weight distribution in particular configurations.
Setup requires measurement
Follow manufacturer instructions for ball height, head angle, bracket placement, spring-bar selection, and front-axle load restoration. Recheck after loading changes and confirm clearances, turning angles, and component ratings.
